Decent choice for family cars

15 Oct 2009 10:31AM

Duration of product used: 1 year

Car Setup:
Honda Civic Hybrid Mk II

Similar Products Tried:
Bridgestone GR80

Strengths:
Quiet, good ride (but not as good as the GR80)
Grip is adequate in the dry

 Weaknesses:
Moderate grip in the wet only

The Review:
Caveat emptor - buyer should know what he is buying. This is a comfort biased tyre for people who will not be pushing hard. Drive within the limits of the tyre and it will be comfortable, quiet and quite economical. Have taken it up to 140+km/h in M'sia without problems (in the dry).
Since the GR80 is no longer available, this was the best equivalent I could find. It grips better than it's predecessor (the Yokohama Aspec dB) for sure.

Great for Toyota Wish

16 Aug 2009 8:59AM

Duration of product used: 6 months

Car Setup:
Toyota Wish 1.8 2007 JDM limited edition model. No MODs such as strut bars for stablisation.

Similar Products Tried:
BridgeStone GR-80 on 185/, but on another car - Hyundai Matrix. Stock tyre Yokohama S221 195/65R15.

Strengths:
Quiet and Comfortable. Good grips for cornering. Brings my car to another level of stability in handling.

 Weaknesses:
Not sure - perhaps not as comfy and quiet as GR-80, but can't confirm as I did not have GR-80 on Wish but Matrix.

The Review:
I should have changed to this tire right from day 1 of my Toyota Wish purchase. My Wish is a JDM limited edition version.

The default Wish stock rims and tyres are 195/65R15 with Yokohama S221 tires.

The new rims and tyres are from Avanti and Yokohama respectively, 215/45R17 87W dna dB ES501. It is slightly smaller than stock tyres in diameter but within the 3% range.

Toyota should have made the 215/45R17 as default for their cars. It is so much stable, less roll, and takes corner very very much better. Previously I can take about 65kmph uphill corner at certain flyover turning. Now, at the same ease level, it can go up to 75kmph. Of course, this can't compare with cars such as Subaru STI and Honda Civic Type R who easily top above 90kmph at such corners.

I did not MOD my vehicle with stablisation bars, etc. So I believe it can go better with such MODs.

I had driven the car up North to Genting and Cameron Highlands where I encounter various different type of roads: concrete, lighter asphalt, darker asphalt. On asphalt it is good, but tend to be noisy on concrete roads. Then again, almost all tyres I am aware are noisy on concrete roads up north. But compared with S221 it is very much better on all asphalt roads and concrete roads.

As for cruising at higher speeds up north, say 150kmph to 160kpmh, it is very stable - not forgetting that the ES501 is a "87W" category of tyre, being "W" is qualified for 270kmph speed. Compared with stock tyre S221, I lost feel of stability in my Toyota Wish beyond 120kmph.

The only downside is that low profile tyre tends to be harsher on pot holes and irregularities on the road. That's why I am thinking of changing the tyre to the same brand but slightly thicker at 215/50R17. Found out the AutoBacs sells 215/45R17 at quite Xpensive price >$900 for 4 tyres, but they don't carry the 215/50R17. Anyone have lobang locally or in Johor, please PM me, especially if they do trade-in.

Not recommended for all cars

19 Mar 2008 4:33PM

Duration of product used: 3 months

Car Setup:
Mitsubishi Lancer 1.6 GLX

Similar Products Tried:
First set of tyres on this car since new

Strengths:
Very quiet and comfortable...that's it!

 Weaknesses:
Grip is horrendous, especially in the wet! Average grip in the dry. Driving with this tyre is very unassuring. Very soft tyres.

The Review:
Will definitely not recommend this tyre to anyone for all cars. Grip is average in the dry, and frighteningly lousy in the wet! ABS kicks in unexpectedly early doing average braking in the dry as well as in slight drizzles...even way below the legal speed limit. Cornering is very 'floaty' and unassuring even in the dry...definitely not for the faint-hearted. Braking distance is fairly longish in the wet.

Yokohama DNA DB ES501 is the worst wet tire !!!

25 Sep 2007 11:46AM

Duration of product used: Not Sure

Car Setup:
BMW 530d sachs absorbers, unmodified original bmw suspension

Similar Products Tried:
Bridgestone 001, Toyo T1R, Conti Sport2

Strengths:
Yokohama DNA DB ES501 only strength is basically of comfort and quietness.

 Weaknesses:
Atrocious performance on wet roads.

The Review:
I would not recommend this tire to any family sedans at all! It has reasonable cornering in the dry but loses out to most good tires (Bridgestone 001R, Toyo T1R, Conti Sport2) anyway.

Its simply is unable to corner well when it rains and you will be forced to slow down drastically as compared to a humble Goodyear NCT5. Don't drive too fast or switch lanes (beyond 50kph) even when dry on road joints and metal joints on freeways.

Perhaps, the worst product buy I ever made for my car.

Great comfy tire, Scary in the Rain

25 Sep 2007 10:49AM

Duration of product used: Not Sure

Car Setup:
Toyota Camry 2007 model

Similar Products Tried:
Michelin PP2, Falken 452

Strengths:
It seems very quiet and very comfortable.

 Weaknesses:
Driving in the rain invokes a sense of insecurity and loss of cornering grip power sometimes even at low speed. This tire is probably the worst wet grip tire I ever experienced!

The Review:
This tire looks beautiful and was highly recommended by Quicksav Bhd. They heavily promoted the tire as the best value in the market for excellent comfort ride with excellent all weather grip.

The actual comforts are pretty good but the insecure feeling is always there even on a slight drizzle day.

I got rid of the tire at a 90 percent monetary loss and bought myself the Falken 452 which was nearly as comfortable as the Yokohama ES501 but with definite superior grip even in the rain.
