3 Drive Variable Sprint Booster

23 Jun 2009 1:28PM

Duration of product used: 1 year

Car Setup:
Stock Colt Plus

Strengths:
Easy to install.
Easy to use.
Safer as when you shift to reverse, it automatically switch off the sprint booster and allow better control.
Make a lot of different in the different mode used
Example :
- Eco mode : Can really see your FC climbing like crazy.
- Normal Mode : Switch off the sprint booster and drive normally
- Sport Mode : Increase throttle response, really can feel the different when you gun the throttle

The Review:
I installed the 3-drive when it was first launched in Singapore as I like the idea of a variable sprint booster that can be switch off normally.
The 3 Drive comes in 3 modes, Eco, Normal and Sport.

In the Eco Mode, there are 5 steps. Eco Mode 1 means 10% reduction in throttle response, Eco Mode 2 increase another 10% all the way to Eco Mode 5.
In Eco Mode 5, you can really see that your FC improves by leaps and bounds. I can get as high as 18km/litre when I am getting normal 14km/litre now. The only problem is that as your throttle is reduced by 50%, you can forgot about any pick up or even power to climb steep hill (Benjamin Sheares Bridge). You can still floor the throttle but still 50% of it is reduced.

In Normal Mode, it switches off the sprint booster and allow normal pick and power.

In Sport Mode, there are 7 steps. Sport Mode 1 increase the throttle response by 10% and Sport Mode 2 another 10%, all the way to Sport Mode 7.
In Sport Mode 7, the different in pick is tremendous. Can feel that the car is really reving to go, a slight touch to the throttle send you spinning off (most of the time with wheel sping on the spot before moving off).
It is really to use Sport Mode especially driving on the NS highway as you don't have to press so hard to maintain the acceleration or speed. Make it easier to drive long distance.

Overall, I find it a great device to have. so much that I have planned to install it in my next car too if it fits.

Lead foot users need apply

Duration of product used: 6 months

Car Setup:
Jazz 1.5S

The Review:
A good throttle controller to ensure that you don't need to accelerate excessively in order to save petrol dollars.

If there's a need to have a boost in acceleration, just switch to sports mode and the car easily over take slow moving traffic effortlessly.

But saving petrol is what it is good at and can earn back the purchase price within the year.

The Review:
I got this installed 4 months ago, installation was simple, the total time it took for the mechanic to install it was about 45mins and 10 mins calibrating it.

The response is immediately faster when set to sport mode 7 settings. A slight depression on my accelerator pedal sets the car off quickly. When set to Eco mode, there is more stomping on the pedal to make it go. Eco mode has 5 settings. In the normal mode the original throttle response is preserved, at least there is no perceptable difference. When gear is on the reverse, there is nothing affected. This is quite a clever design on Pivot's end.

At the end of the day, you probably would stick to the ECO mode because this device actually saves up to 20-25% of petrol for me. It is something like a petrol nanny, looking out for you on every urge to speed.

To clarify, this device does not increase HP of anykind, it simply controls/modifies the throttle curve (depending on the mode that is set). This helps you to either get the max out of your traffic light sprints (SP7 mode) or save you petrol (eco drive mode). In sports mode, however, since the throttle curve is modified, you get full open throttle in the shortest possible time. Quite exhilarating, at least for the first few instances when the 3 drive is first installed.

Price is on the high side, as compared to the Sprint Booster. However, the customisability of the 3 drive comes up tops here.

In these days of ever increasing petrol prices, this little device is something you can consider to save extra change for the next rainy day.
